Daniel Henchman correspondence concerning deaths caused by "throat distemper", 1737.

Seventeen letters with statistics concerning the number of people who died during a diphtheria epidemic in New England, 1735-1737. Many of the letters consist of printed circulars dated Boston March 12, 1736/7 produced by Daniel Henchman on which data was recorded concerning their town or precinct and returned to Henchman. Correspondence was received from Amesbury, Bradford, Chester, Exeter, Falmouth, Hampton Falls, Harwich, Kittery, Portsmouth, Salisbury, Sandwich, Scarbrough, Springfield, and Wenham.

Daniel Henchman (1689-1761), the Boston, Mass. bookseller, was the son of Hezekiah ( -1694) and Abigail Henchman ( - ). Hezekiah was a son of Capt. Daniel Henchman ( -1685), a school teacher, fighter in King Philip's War, and one of the founders of Worcester, Mass. Daniel Henchman may have served an apprenticeship with a Boston bookseller, and by July, 1712, when the earliest ledger in this collection begins, he was in business for himself as a merchant.
